We believe that education is an important pathway out of poverty and that high-quality early childhood education, family engagement and early social-emotional learning provide the foundation for school success.

Reading Buddies

Reading Buddies are volunteers who share a positive reading experience with an eager student for one hour each week. They use Early Learning Focus’ LETS Read curriculum as a guide so they don’t “teach reading skills” as much as share a love of books, both for the information books impart and the wonderful stories they contain. They use the LETS Read program much as families use it, reading books that interest their young buddies, and get suggestions and materials for simple activities to follow up the reading. The program was initiated at Home Plessy Community Charter School.

In the second semester of 2020, middle-schoolers at James Singleton Charter will be Reading Buddies to Pre-K, Kindergarten and Grade One students.
